Pentecostalism

Pentecostalism

is a charismatic religious movement that gave rise to a number of Protestant churches in the United Stated in the 20th century. It  is unique in its belief that all Christians should seek a postconversion religious experience called baptism with the Holy Spirit. It emphasises direct personal experience of God.

Pentecostals believe that water baptism is an outward sign of conversion and that baptism by the Holy Spirit is a different spiritual experience that everyone who believes in Jesus should receive.

The term Pentecostal is derived from Pentecost, an event that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus Christ, and the speaking in "foreign" tongues as described in the second chapter of the Acts of Apostles.

About the practice of speaking tongues appear reports and documents throughout the history of the church.

In 1900, Charles Parham, an American evangelist and faith healer, began teaching that speaking in tongues was the Bible evidence of Spirit baptism.
