Take Regular Breaks from Sitting

In recent years, the adverse impacts copious amounts of sitting can have on one’s health have come to the forefront. For example, a number of studies have found that sitting for more than eight hours a day without engaging physical activity carries a similar risk of death to obesity and smoking. Fortunately, engaging in 60-75 minutes of moderately intense physical activity per day has been found to counteract the effects of excessive sitting.

For many of us, the workday entails sitting in front of a computer for 8-10 hours. Although sitting for extended periods is thought to be an unavoidable part of many jobs, this doesn’t have to be the case. Investing in a good standing desk, for instance, can be a great way to avoid spending the workday glued to a chair. If a standing desk is out of the question, taking a break from sitting and engaging in physical activity every 30 minutes can also prove helpful in this endeavor.

You should also avoid sitting at home whenever possible. Standing when watching television, talking on the phone and engaging in other leisure activities is both easy and beneficial to your long-term health.

Simon Keighley Great advice Tatana - I try and take regular breaks away from the screen while working at my computer. A standing desk sounds a great idea. Thanks for the tips.
