David Bowie has so many singles that it’s hard to remember all of them. “The Prettiest Star” isn’t one of his most popular endeavours, but it’s infamous. Rumor has it that Bowie sang the ditty over the phone when asked his first wife, Angela, to marry him. When it was recorded, Bowie enlisted the help of Marc Bolan to play guitar.

Tony Visconti, a famous producer, was the reason that Bolan was brought onto “The Prettiest Star.” Visconti later recalled how well the session went—until Bolan’s wife said to Bowie that Marc was “too good” to play on “this record.” That would foreshadow the parting of ways (and later the rivalry) between the two.

Sadly, the relationship didn’t quite go to plan and the two ended up parting ways and divorced in 1980. Thankfully, the single remains – but if you want to add it to your collection you might end up paying through the nose. Copies regularly go for over $2,000.

Kevin Jacobson I have about 1000 old LPs. I need to go through them and check.

Simon Keighley Top tune, Bill - I was surprised to read the original release of 'The Prettiest Star' sold fewer than 800 copies. I wish I had a copy - ha! Thanks for sharing.
