Major gold buyer invests in crypto bank

In this article:

Tether is deepening its presence in the United States with a new investment.

The move marks a major step for Tether which has historically focused on offshore and emerging markets.

Tether is the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin USDT, and is also a major gold holder.

Strategic push into U.S. stablecoin infrastructure

On Feb. 5, Tether announced its $100 million investment in Anchorage Digital, a federally chartered crypto bank in the U.S.

Anchorage provides custody, staking, settlement and stablecoin services for institutional clients. The two companies are already partners through USAT, Tether’s U.S.-compliant stablecoin built to meet domestic regulatory requirements.

“Tether exists to challenge the status quo and build global infrastructure for freedom,” said CEO Paolo Ardoino. “Our investment in Anchorage Digital reflects a shared belief in secure, transparent, and resilient financial systems.”

For Anchorage, the partnership brings both capital and credibility.

The deal values the bank at $4.2 billion, according to an Anchorage statement shared with CoinDesk.

Anchorage said the investment will also fund its first-ever tender offer, allowing employees to sell equity at the same valuation.

A balance sheet built like a global financial powerhouse

Beyond stablecoins, Tether’s balance sheet is increasingly looking like that of a traditional financial institution. The company has quietly amassed 80 to 116 metric tons of gold, becoming the world’s largest private-sector gold holder through its reserves and gold-backed token XAUT.

Tether also holds $122 billion in direct U.S. Treasuries and over $141 billion in total Treasury exposure, per its latest BDO attestation dated Jan. 30.
