Senator Lummis introduces another Bitcoin bill amid price crash

On March 30, U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) introduced the "Mined in America Act" to boost the mining of digital assets in the United States and codify President Donald Trump’s executive order to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

The bill directs the Department of Commerce to establish a voluntary certification program for crypto miners.

It also directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership to help American manufacturers develop secure and energy-efficient mining equipment.

The bill also urges certified facilities to phase out equipment manufactured by "companies tied to foreign adversaries." It is supported by the Satoshi Action Fund, whose co-founder and CEO Dennis Porter said,

“America controls 38 percent of the world’s Bitcoin hash rate, but 97 percent of the hardware powering it comes from China. That is not leadership, that is a liability."

The "Mined in America Act" breaks that dependency, he added.

More on Cynthia Lummis:

Lummis' consistent support for Bitcoin

Sen. Lummis said that President Trump had pledged to make the United States the digital asset capital of the world and that they were not backing down.

“The Mined in America Act brings this industry home through forward-thinking initiatives to secure our financial future.”

This isn't the first time that the pro-crypto senator has introduced a bill to boost digital assets.

In July 2024, she introduced the Boosting Innovation, Technology and Competitiveness through Optimized Investment Nationwide (BITCOIN) Act to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve so that the national debt can be paid off.

After Trump signed the executive order to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve in March last year, she reintroduced the same bill to codify Trump's order.

In July last year, she also introduced the digital asset tax legislation to provide a de minimis exemption for crypto gains taxes on transactions of up to $300.

Though none of these bills have passed, Lummis has continued to push for pro-crypto regulation and adoption in the U.S.

Bitcoin has lost more than 40% of its value over the last six months as it trades at $66,606.22 at the time of writing.

Simon Keighley This sounds like a strategic move to reduce foreign reliance and reinforce domestic crypto infrastructure, even as market conditions remain uncertain.
