Months after including Bitcoin in its Tips feature, Twitter is branching out to Ethereum addresses.
"As of today, global Twitter users can add Ethereum Address to their Tips," a company spokesperson told Decrypt. "We’ve continued adding to our list of payment providers to ensure that Tips offers options for as many people as possible, no matter where you are."
Twitter Tips first launched in September. It allows users to link their payment details for third-party services such as Venmo or Cash App. Anyone so inclined can pay a Twitter user for their insights. Twitter account holders who want to tip in BTC directly can also copy and paste another user's BTC address into their own wallet service—or tip directly via the Strike wallet.
In November, Decrypt wrote about hacker Jane Wong, who found a way to add her ETH address to the feature, back when it was limited to Bitcoin addresses. Now, the process is much easier, with no coding skills required to incorporate an Ethereum address into a profile—though users can't tip ETH as seamlessly as they can with BTC. Instead, they must copy and paste the address.
"Like Twitter, digital currencies operate without global barriers," the spokesperson said. "We’re excited to incorporate Ethereum in addition to Bitcoin payment in Tips, enabling more people to participate in the digital economy with as little friction as possible."
Notably, this development comes several months after former CEO Jack Dorsey's departure from the social media company. Dorsey, a Bitcoin maximalist who doesn't put much stock in Ethereum, now leads payments company Block (formerly Square) full time. Block in the last half year has revealed plans to produce Bitcoin mining rigs and a decentralized exchange for sending Bitcoin and fiat.
